Every sense is catered to, as the artist duo Anansi’s Web presents their new performance, ‘Dimanche’, created specifically for Roskilde Festival.

With pounding bass, calypso beats, and large-scale masquerade costumes, they create an intense and turbocharged space. Anansi’s Web explores the folkloric traditions of Caribbean carnival, sound systems and their resonance in contemporary hip hop culture.

In an explosion of sound and movement ‘Dimanche’ focuses on Jab Jab, a Caribbean emblem of political defiance that will both entice and unsettle the audience. This hypnotic figure, also known as Molasses Devil, is often depicted with carnival participants smearing themselves in molasses and wearing horns.

'Dimanche' focuses on Caribbean carnival culture as both a euphoric celebration and a space for collective political resistance. Here, rules are bent or broken, and conventional social hierarchies and limitations are set aside.

Behind Anansi’s Web is the British multidisciplinary artist Curtly Thomas, who, through his works combining music and performance, has established himself as a powerful voice. The other member of the duo is the artist and producer Nelta Kasparian, rooted in France and Guadeloupe, whose works often revolve around music, club, and carnival culture.

Dimanche is produced by Roskilde Festival in partnership with Haus der Kunst, Munich.
