FRIDAY 5 JULY

Artist trio invites to a communal meal and interactive performance about food extractivism

  • Friday 5 July
Elyes Lariani, Monia Sander Haj-Mohamed & MouayedEl Ghazouani: Crying by the Sea, 11:30, Food Is Now

Experience the artists Monia Sander Haj-Mohamed (DK), Mouayed El Ghazouani (TN) and Elyes Lariani (TN) transforming the venue Food Is Now into a field of olive trees and be part of an olive's thought-provoking journey from Tunisia to a supermarket in Denmark.

The artists' interactive performance is made specifically for Roskilde Festival and combines dancing, reading, and food making to facilitate an artistic dialogue about the globalized food industry and its impact on small, traditional farmers.

The terminology extractivism is used to describe the industry's extraction of large quantities of raw materials and natural resources to profit from the export of these goods without benefiting the local population

As a participant you will be guided by Mouayed El Ghazouani and explore your body’s repetitive movements when harvesting olives, making oil, and buying oil in the supermarket. You will be invited to act collectively, taking turns vocalizing lines of a poetic conversation about an olive’s journey through a globalized world, written by Haj-Mohamed. Finally, a meal will be served based on olives relating to the shared experience, prepared by Elyes Lariani.

Elyes Lariani is an experimental cook and food activist looking into ancient and lost food knowledge and preindustrial cooking techniques. He is based in Tunisia.

Mouayed El Ghazouani is a choreographer and dancer. He won the award for best stage design in 'Seasons of Creation 2023' established by the National Theater of Tunisia. He is based in Tunisia.

Monia Sander Haj-Mohamed is a performance artist and writer based in Denmark. She was awarded the Schade Award in 2019.

The performance is presented in collaboration with Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology, which is based both in Denmark and Tunisia.
