  • Monday 1 July
Talk: Creating communities through soundssystems, 11:30, Flokkr

Cumbia, mambo, samba, salsa, soca, zouk, dembow, dancehall, champeta, soukous, and much more. Get ready for a hot Caribbean breeze as the picó sound systems TurboMaradona and La Saramuya throw a blast of a street party and celebrate the cultural community on the scene Dancefloor (fka Destroy Me Once, Destroy Me Twice).

Picó sound systems have deep roots in Afro-Caribbean culture and have evolved into a symbol of freedom and community. The first picó sound systems were created in the 1950s as an attempt to democratize the access to music by bringing people together at street parties, and the sound systems are still an important part of social life along the Caribbean coasts.

At Roskilde Festival, the picó sound systems run every evening during First Days.

The non-profit organization Future Female Sounds, which works to make DJ culture more accessible to women and gender minorities, also stops by and contributes to the party with French hip hop, Afrobeats, and Southeast Asian house.

It will be a true Verbena; a street party in authentic Picó style.

If you want to know more about picó culture, stop by the Flokkr stage on Monday morning, where experts in picó culture along with representatives from Dream City and Soundboks will talk about the history of the sound systems. Including their influence on Roskilde Festival, where many camps themselves set up sound systems in the camping areas.

La Saramuya & TurboMaradona are some of the first picós in Europe. The sound systems are part of a larger music community driven by the desire to fuse different cultures and musical styles for street parties with vibrant dance floors.
