Mutated rhythms blend traditional Middle Eastern percussion and rave culture

After working for several years as a rock musician, Cairo musician Abadir sparked a creative explosion when he acquired a drum machine and a synthesizer and began a journey into mutated electronic rhythms.

Early on, he discovered that by using loops of traditional Egyptian folk music Maqsoum, playing it at high BPM and fusing it with jungle music rhythms, he could create a new musical language that worked surprisingly well on the dance floor. Since then, he has continued to push the boundaries of rhythmic electronic music by blending syncopated elements of drum'n'bass, jungle, footwork and juke with Arabic vocals and elements of traditional Middle Eastern percussion. This is strongly evident on his latest album, aptly titled Mutate. Released in 2022 on Shanghai-based label SVBKVLT, the album is a true masterclass in his ability to create surprising and engaging links between traditional rhythms and rave culture.

Live, he has begun performing the music in collaboration with versatile Turkish percussionist Hogir, who like Abadir is an open-minded explorer of global rhythm cultures, weaving them together in a dynamic synthesis of inspirations from the Middle East, India, Japan and Europe. A global rave in a class of its own awaits you at Roskilde Festival!

The show is part of the concert series Heartcore World Music XXXL, curated by Behrang Najafi, Shahin Entezami (Temp-Illusion), and Simin Stine Ramezanali (abji_hypersun/SLIM0). The program features artists who navigate the intersection of hip-hop, scratching, and acoustic music, contributing to breaking down musical conventions. Heartcore World Music XXXL invites you to an immersive experience that challenges preconceived notions, creates new spaces, and encourages you to experience music in a fresh way.
