Poetic drive and personal stories from rising star on the drill scene

Young Brixton rapper Cristale is a master of words, and her drill-inspired tracks overflow with poetic energy at a furious pace.

The now 23-year-old rising star found a home in the words while still at school. She wrote poetry, but also threw herself into rap battles and poetry slams among other young people, which she routinely won.

When she was introduced to the UK's drill scene in 2019, she started uploading freestyles on her own SoMe platforms, and her obvious talents as a lyricist and rapper quickly caught the ears of many in the scene. For Cristale, however, linguistic show off is not an end in itself. She also wants to create meaningful lyrics, which was only clearly demonstrated on her impressive EP What It's Like to Be Young (2022). Here, she draws on personal stories from her upbringing in South London, while distancing herself from the macho codes that dominate parts of the drill scene.

Cristale has truly found her own voice as a rapper with a highly personal and poetic blend of hip-hop, grime and drill, and now you can look forward to experiencing her sublime microphone skills at Roskilde.
