Tunisian DJ and producer Deena Abdelwahed is at the forefront of creating a contemporary soundtrack for the Arabian club scene.

Here, traditional Middle Eastern dance music and Arabic rhythms intertwine with dark electronic undercurrents, heavy bass and metallic beats to create a visionary and ever-changing music. It's music that explores complex layers of modern Arab identity, but at the same time goes straight to the body and dance muscles.

Deena Abdelwahed has proven this with dazzling shows at festivals such as Rewire and CTM, and she's especially shown it on her latest album, Jbal Rrsas جبل الرصاص. Here, with help from Syrian/Iraqi musicologist Khyam Allami, she has worked to deconstruct the Western bias written into many production tools and instead explore traditional Middle Eastern scales.

The album received rave reviews and was featured on Pitchfork's list of the best electronic releases of 2023. Deena Abdelwahed is also a highly respected name among fellow musicians. Her original approach to electronic dance music impressed Fever Ray and others so much that they invited her to guest on their Plunge album. Now Roskilde Festival gets the chance to experience one of the most interesting electronic musicians from the Middle East right now.
