Personal songwriting between pop and experimental sound

Danish-Chinese Helena Gao creates music that ignites the fire in pop hearts, but also takes the audience on a journey of sonic experimentation.

Music has been with her all her life, as she learned to play the piano at a young age. However, discovering artists like Kate Bush, Björk and Radiohead opened the door to new ways of thinking about music, and when she was also introduced to the joy of putting music together in Logic, she began to define her own personal musical landscape.

The rest of us can rejoice, because Helena Gao, like her role models, has a knack for crafting songs that are inventive and boundary-pushing, but still have a broad appeal. From her debut in 2020 with the single "Cybergirl", she has impressed with a personal voice that speaks from an alienating outsider position, carried by equal parts melancholy and sarcasm.

She has toured with Danish pop star Tobias Rahim and released two acclaimed EPs, most recently Mirth & Matter, which came out in early 2024. She is predicted by Danish music media to have her true breakthrough this year. Swing by her concert at Roskilde Festival and find out why.
