HHY & THE KAMPALA UNITPT/UG

SATURDAY 6 JULY

Dub, techno, drum trance and chanting horns in a magical meeting

  • Saturday 6 July
    20:30, Gloria

Enter a world of dub, electronica, trance-inducing drums, industrial soundscapes, and ecstatic horn riffs when the one and only HHY & The Kampala Unit visit Roskilde Festival.

The project brings together one of Portugal's most visionary musicians, Jonathan Uliel Saldanha – known from the band HHY & The Macumbas – with a team of East Africa's experimental trailblazers. This special team came about when Saldanha was invited to Kampala by record label Nyege Nyege to work with local musicians in a special residency.

Here he teamed up with wild drummer Omutaba and activist trumpeter Florence Lugemwa to create music that sounds like nothing else, but nonetheless excites fans of dub, techno, jazz, and wild electronic experimentation. In 2020, the band released the deeply original and darkly pulsating album Lithium Blast, where their ritualistic music is further elevated by a horn orchestra from a Kampala prison.

Since then, they have impressed on festival stages with an expression that is equal parts techno party and magical ritual with a mission to connect body and spirituality and a deep belief that music can create community, presence, and healing of the soul. You are invited to join HHY & The Kampala Unit as they bring their dark and life-giving magic to Roskilde.
