Poetic songs and grief work from extraordinary folk music talent

With one of the strongest debut albums in recent years, young poet and songwriter Kara Jackson created a minor sensation in 2023. However, the album Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love did not come out of the blue, as she released the EP A Song for Every Chamber of the Heart in 2019. That same year, she received the prestigious title of National Youth Poet Laureate for her poetry.

Poetry and music are two sides of the same coin for the Illinois-born artist, whose debut album opens up a space for despair, sadness, love and rage through stunningly beautiful songs rooted in American folk, country and blues. Crisp guitar tones and Jackson's soulful voice lift the often raw lyricism, while almost chamber music-like arrangements unfold with strings, harp, pedal steel and electronic layers.

While the songs exude personal grief and a rare intimacy, Kara Jackson has also learned from folk music's tradition of protest songs, uncovering how personal grief and pain are woven into capitalist and racist structures. And she speaks out in furious songs like "Dickhead Blues".

The album has rightly been hailed as a masterpiece by numerous leading media outlets, and we look forward to seeing this unique songwriting talent unfold her almost healing universe of grief, vulnerability, and strength at Roskilde Festival.
