WEDNESDAY 3 JULY

Alarming doomsday music between noise, rap and industrial jazz

  • Wednesday 3 July
    21:35, Avalon

Step into a corrosive acid bath when Virginia duo Prison Religion visit Roskilde Festival with their disturbing and cathartic sound.

With their original blend of rap, electronic music and hard noise, Prison Religion holds up a mirror to a society in crisis. It's brutal, like the world that musicians Parker Black and Warren Jones see around them – a world of war, hardship, and social injustice.

Prison Religion sounds like someone has activated the apocalypse disaster alarm. But the seemingly massive wall of noise they conjure up also contains a profound musicality, and Prison Religion themselves say they draw significant inspiration from the subversive side of jazz.

Indeed, the title of their latest album, Hard Industrial B.O.P., pays explicit homage to the hard bop of the 50s, which was an aesthetic slap in the face to mainstream jazz, but also music that linked to social protest and the civil rights movement. Similarly, Prison Religion refuse to please the audience, and now they're ready to give Roskilde a noisy wake up call.

Get ready for a unique and immersive concert experience at eye level. Prison Religion will take over the floor itself for a very special floor show at Avalon, which is dedicated to extreme and punk music all Wednesday. Expect intense performances, stage changes at the speed of sound, and outstanding musicality that goes straight to the heart – and right in the face.
