The ecstatic spirituality of gospel music meets a raw blues feel when the legendary family ensemble Staples Jr. Singers bring their unique repertoire to life at Roskilde Festival.

With roots in Mississippi, the group was the vanguard of a movement of soul and gospel musicians in the 70s that used the traditions of gospel music to tell tough stories and document social injustice. They sang about what they saw around them - about racism, civil rights, and poverty. And the only album they managed to release boiled down the struggle for social justice in its title to the insistent question: When Do We Get Paid

The album was released in 1975, when the only living members of the group were still teenagers. However, when David Byrne re-released the album on his Luaka Bop label in 2022, the band's passionate soul reached new listeners, and this year, Staples Jr. Singers return with their first new album in 50 years.

Their new album will naturally be part of the group’s repertoire when they visit Roskilde with their soulful songs and gospel-influenced vocal harmonies that still sound amazingly vital.
