Hypnotic encounter between ritual dance, shamanism, and string instruments from Java

At this year's Roskilde Festival, a portal into deep traditions and ritual music from Rancakalong in Western Java will be opened when Tarawangsa Sunda Lugina performs.

The ensemble, consisting of the two instrumentalists Pak Pupung Supena and Pak Tahya, a team of dancers and a shaman who guides the ritual, create a unique and trance-inducing experience rooted in the culture of their village. The music and dance pay ceremonial homage to the Javanese fertility goddess Nyimas Pohaci and have traditionally served as thanksgiving after a good harvest.

The music, characterized by the traditional stringed instruments Rebab Tarawangsa and Kacapi Tarawangsa, has been passed down through many generations. Both the music and dance fluidly connect past and present in a trancelike space where the performers both give space to their own emotions and experiences, but also act as mediums for the spirits of the past to send messages to the present.

Don't miss this unique chance to experience the ancient rituals, hypnotic dancers, and beautiful sounds at Roskilde this summer.
