WEDNESDAY 3 JULY

Resistance and celebration from queer extreme music trailblazers

  • Wednesday 3 July
    23:20, Avalon

Since 2011, The HIRS Collective has been fighting a fierce battle on the side of the oppressed. The Philadelphia-based collective uses shockwaves of extreme music, primal screams and punk ethos to resist the system and support marginalized groups such as trans, queer and poc communities.

Self-described as an "ever growing, and never ending collective of anti-authoritarian freaks, queers, outcasts, & weirdos." The HIRS Collective operates with a fluid cast of musicians but revolves around core members Jenna Pup on vocals and drum machine and Scott "Esem" on guitar.

With over 50 releases to their name, they're truly a sprawling entity, releasing their second full-length studio album, We're Still Here, in 2023, where the collective includes musicians from bands like Thou, Melt-Banana and Full of Hell, as well as hardcore legend Justin Pearson and Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson!

The music's blend of punk guitars, screaming vocals and grindcore-inspired blast beats has led critics to compare the sound to the likes of Converge and Napalm Death, and at the band's infamous live shows, the extreme expression is often mixed with renditions of well-known pop hits, creating a radical, but also uplifting and inclusive party where mosh pit and dance floor meet.

Get ready for a unique and immersive concert experience at eye level. The Hirs Collective will take over the floor itself for a very special floor show at Avalon, which is dedicated to extreme and punk music all Wednesday. Expect intense performances, stage changes at the speed of sound, and outstanding musicality that goes straight to the heart – and right in the face.
