Dreamy indie pop and raw emotional depths

American singer-songwriter zzzahara manages to create chamber-music indie pop that simultaneously delves into nostalgic pockets of time and exudes an unflinching presence.

Warm synth figures, ringing indie guitars and hazy shoegaze elements underpin fragile melodies, revealing an artist who grips the listener with personal narratives and yearning moods. This was evident on the album Tender, released in 2023 to rave reviews from the likes of PopMatters, who wrote: "A fantastic and sonically relevant collection of pop rock with no time to waste and no interest in beating around the bush".

Zzzahara has a past in the duo The Simps, but released their debut solo album, Liminal Spaces, on Lex Records in 2022. Here, they emerged as a highly relevant songwriter, using indie pop and shoegaze as a starting point to unfold coming-of-age stories about growing up as a queer person of Mexican and Filipino descent in a predominantly white and straight rock landscape in L.A. At the same time, the songs reflected on the rootlessness of growing up in an area affected by rapid gentrification.

Their ability to open up to tender and naked emotions through indie pop is also demonstrated on their latest release, a highly personal interpretation of The Cardigans' romantic classic "Lovefool". We’re looking forward to zzzahara's strong, fragile and dreamy pop universe at Roskilde.
