The world is endless and full of possibilities. That’s at least how it feels when listening to DJ Koze’s latest album, Knock Knock, a tribute to summer, psychedelia and seriously skillful sampling. The album was one of the most acclaimed 2018 releases, topping several year-end lists.
But let’s backtrack a little. DJ Koze isn’t just anybody. DJ Koze is probably the most acclaimed German DJ of the past 25 years. He even won back-to-back DJ of the Year six years in a row (!) in SPEX, one of Germany’s most important magazines.
He tasted success with the band Fischmob in the 90s after which he devoted himself to electronic music and DJ’ing. He became one of the success stories of the influential Kompakt label as he made a name for himself as an eclectic DJ, mastering everything from ambient to breakbeats, always looking for new inspiration and sounds from all over the world.
His albums reflect this, too, with guest appearances from artists as different as Caribou, José González, Matthew Dear, Apparat, Milosh, Róisín Murphy, Kurt Wagner of Lambchop and Sophia Kennedy. The latter is one of the artists that DJ Koze has signed to his popular Pampa Records label.
As a live DJ, he builds his sets on disco and house tracks, blending styles and genres that feel like a meaningful journey you don’t have to think about. It’s all about being there.
Stefan Kozalla, as his civil name is, is originally from Flensburg, just south of the Danish border. He will feel right at home at Roskilde Festival, and you will feel at home in front of the stage when he closes the Apollo stage with a gigantic party.
