Our Green Footsteps

This year, Roskilde Festival aims even more than before at climate-friendly solutions. With the climate campaign Green Footsteps, the audience is encouraged to act in a climate-friendly manner, but Roskilde Festival will of course lead the way in the fight against climate changes.

We call our own climate-friendly initaitives Our Green Footsteps. Accordingly, Roskilde Festival has made a climate account in order to find out in which areas we can do more for the environment and the climate and also in order to follow the development over the next years.

The four areas that account for the majority of the festival’s climate impact – and where our effort therefore is greatest – are:

  • TRANSPORT
On 28 June when Roskilde Festival opens the gates to the music fest of the year, tens of thousands of people will set out for the festival. Audience transport to Roskilde Festival represents more than 80 % of the festival’s direct CO2 emissions – and the audience is therefore encouraged to use public transportation or take the bike instead of the car. Perhaps as the only festival in the world, Roskilde Festival has its very own train station at the camping area.

And as something new, the audience’s bicycles will be well taken care of this year in the festival’s attended and lighted bicycle parking areas. In addition, Roskilde Festival has chosen to cut down on the number of rented cars used internally by 10 % in 2009. In that way, more of the festival’s own workers will get on their bikes as well.

  • ELECTRICITY
The festival’s power consumption will this year be covered by power from windmills. In order to also save power, great efforts have been made to get low-energy equipment on the stages. Accordingly, there is now LED equipment on all of the festival’s stages – particularly at Odeon where almost all lighting is LED.

In lightchains at the festival area, there will this year be used low-energy light bulbs instead of regular light bulbs. This corresponds to changing more than 5000 bulbs.

  • FOOD
The production of vegetarian produce emits significantly less greenhouse gasses than meat. This year, Roskilde Festival therefore has extra focus on increasing the number and the quality of vegetarian dishes. Several of the food stalls also go for local produce this year and have changed many groceries in favour of local produce in season.

  • WASTE
Roskilde Festival works intensively on recycling as much as possible in order to minimise incineration of waste and the ensuing CO2 emission. We therefore have refund on all plastic cups, coffee cups, cans, plastic lids, cardboard carriers and wine boxes sold from the beverage stalls. There is also refund on containers which the audience brings along themselves – even if they are not part of the Danish refund system.

In addition, Roskilde Festival collects camping equipment that would otherwise be left behind at the camping area. Through the past four years, about 10,000 sleepingbags have been collected. As something new, we also offer to store used camping chairs until Roskilde Festival 2010 when they will be handed out again in shop Spejder Sport’s stalls in return for a receipt.

In addition, we naturally continue our work for more eco-labelled, organic and Fairtrade-certified articles. This year’s T-shirt is, for example, both Fairtrade and organic.
