Imagery of rock’n’roll

A number of polar bears are in distress on the way to the Arena stage. They are being threatened by smoke belching industrial chimnies – but all you can smell is graffiti spraypaint. .The plankwork is being decorated for the 10th consecutive year.

Sirium from Australia and Does from Holland are working hard on their piece ”Climate”  Their graffiti painting is part of  the open art picture, which is slowly developing with threatened animals and poisonous clouds in an explosion of colour.

Turning a problem into advantage for the crowd
”Disorganised graffiti used to be expensive to wash off during the 90s. As a result, a reversal  of the situation was decided using graffiti art as a part of the festival’s planned decoration,” says Lars Pedersen.

This year is the 10th year he coordinates the festival’s graffiti decoration. There is lots to do when 100 graffiti artists are filling out a 1 km wall in 4.5 days. It has to be said that the artists bring their own sketches with them, and they will be able to manage their task before the festival opening, he insures.

Graffiti as music
On the walls between the Oval and Arena stages, the theme is “music.” Skulls and chains, robotlike checks and dancing tangents are just a few of the motives that are so noisy that you can almost hear heavy, electronica and hip hop in your inner ear.

”Graffiti has a bad reputation. But Roskilde Festival provides a possibility to show the artform as serious, versatile and positive.” says Lars.

The artists themselves are either professional graffiti artists or people with a background in graphics. Some have been here before, and others are rookies. This combination has the advantage that the artists can exchange methodology and inspiration from each other’s styles.

It looks as though it is really working for Does and Sirium.

A real graffiti artist obviously has a graffiti name. Does and Sirium are no exception.
