Large part of Camping West to be a gravel pit

Roskilde Festival is challenged with regards to camping areas in 2010. New areas will be taken into use.

We knew that the machines would move westwards at some point, but we had hoped that it would not be for another couple of years.

Unfortunately, now is the time – A new gravel pit sees the light of day in the middle of Camping West.

Roskilde Festival's camping areas are located in the middle of one of the largest raw material extraction areas in Denmark. Therefore, gravel must be dug, to be used for cement and concrete. It is settled by law and cannot be helped.

For Roskilde Festival and our audience it is horrible to see good camping areas turn into holes in the ground. But since we know about the situation, we are looking forward with constructive mind and get the best out of it.

Roskilde Festival is in close dialogue with Nymølle Stenindustri, the company operating the gravel pits at the festival area. We have an agreement that as soon as they have made their digging plans, they will give Roskilde Festival notice so that we can plan according to it.

Help from the municipality of Roskilde
Since the challenges of gravel extraction are now greater than ever – because extraction is taking place close to the festival site at Camping East and because a new gravel pit is to be dug at Camping West – the municipality of Roskilde is helping Roskilde Festival.

Therefore, we are focusing on creating new camping areas as close as possible to the festival site.

New areas to the east and the south
For Roskilde Festival 2010, we are planning to include several new areas, including east of Køgevej (near entrance East) and to the south, near the village of Vor Frue.

In this way, we can create new camping areas so that we have ample space for our many festival-goers.

At the same time, new road layout, access to electricity and sanitation is planned along with a tunnel leading under the trafficked Køgevej. These initiatives help ensure that we can create proper conditions for the audience despite the major changes at the camping area.

Roskilde Festival is looking forward to inviting the audience onto the new areas, and we hope that the good traditions from the soon-to-be dug-up areas can also strike root in a new place.
