RESEARCH ON GENERATION Z AND THE CLIMATE CRISIS AT RF23

The Generation Z Survey investigates young people’s attitudes towards nature and the climate crisis.

In collaboration with the University of Brighton, we are undertaking a research project in 2023 that explores how young people’s attitudes towards the climate crisis could be influenced by their participation at the Roskilde Festival.

The research project examines whether and how outdoor music festivals could contribute solutions to alleviate the climate crisis by creating climate-conscious communities and supporting behavioural changes among young people.

The study will be conducted through interviews, surveys, diary notes, and pictures from festival participants, as well as observation studies at this year’s Roskilde Festival.

We have chosen to make the festival available for the study because the climate crisis affects all of humanity, and especially the younger generation.

Perhaps that is why we find the most wholehearted climate activism among young people, but also hear about feelings of anxiety and powerlessness.

Education, legislation, and technological developments are crucial elements in creating positive environmental changes. However, more fundamental behavioural changes seem essential if we are to halt global temperature increases.

Therefore, we are interested in contributing new, research-based knowledge about the potential for music festivals to promote connections between people and nature.
