The 50th edition of Roskilde Festival will take place in 2020. We celebrate this amazing milestone throughout the year.
The birth of Roskilde Festival is the story of young people who did something. They created a community right there and then.
Two high school students had a goal, they dreamed big and took matters into their own hands. They created an event, called it Sound Festival and gathered over 10,000 young people who enjoyed the freedom, the community and the music in late August 1971.
That was the foundation for Roskilde Festival. The community has grown since then. The festival has become much bigger but the focus remains the same. It is about commitment, about making a difference, paving the way by means of music, art and sustainability.
In 2020, we’re doing it for the 50th time. This milestone calls for a celebration. Not just a celebration of the festival itself but also a celebration of the community at the festival – and the importance of it.
We do this by marking what Roskilde Festival has always been about: Supporting children and young people and giving them a voice, an opportunity and a free space. We want to look towards the future.
We want to celebrate the fact that Roskilde Festival still is a gathering place for generations of young people, and we want to applaud the voluntary commitment, which is the life blood of the festival.

We’re celebrating under the header Time Is Now.
We do this because Roskilde Festival is about the present time, it reflects its own time and it always strives to take bearings of the future. That’s how it has always been. That’s how it will still be.
Time Is Now embraces an eternal narrative of youth, and it points to the sense of topicality that is particularly strong these years. Especially among young people: It's time for action. It's time to make changes through dreams, energy, hope and will.
So, what will happen in 2020?
We can’t wait to tell you more about this. Look forward to concerts, exhibitions, book releases, record releases, new opportunities to receive financial support for projects for and by young people, and, not least, lots of meetings and debates between the numerous people, movements and communities that characterise the world and the youth generation anno 2020.
And of course, we’re busy preparing another unforgettable festival that you shouldn’t dare miss out on.
RF50 is not the end nor the beginning of anything new. It's a milestone on a long journey. Roskilde Festival is always in transit.
