Extraordinary peculiarities and where to find them

CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. For Roskilde Festival 2019, they join forces with the Niels Bohr Institute, a research institute at the University of Copenhagen whose work covers a broad perspective of physics.

During Roskilde Festival 2019, CERN and the Niels Bohr Institute welcome you inside the Science Pavilion where they will host several workshops where they invite you to see the world in a new way and at the same time question the community around you.

Get your hands dirty building your own detector to see elementary particles and cosmic rays coming down from the sky. Construct solar chargers for the Tower of Power and learn about the secrets of alcohol's physical (and sometimes magical) properties. You can also master (well, sort of!) the theremin.

Workshops in the Science Pavilion:

Sunday 30 June:

11.00: Make a Solar Charger
13.00: Experience the Subatomic World (Cloud Chamber)
15.00: Play the Theremin
17.00: Beer Bongs and Bosons (Science Lounge)

Monday 1 July:

11.00: Make a Solar Charger
13.00: Experience the Subatomic World (Cloud Chamber)
15.00: Play the Theremin
17.00: Beer Bongs and Bosons (Science Lounge)

Tuesday 2 July:

11.00: Make a Solar Charger
13.00: Play the Theremin
15.00: Experience the Subatomic World (Cloud Chamber)
17.00: Beer Bongs and Bosons (Science Lounge)

FLOKKR activities

CERN and the Niels Bohr Institute also host a few activities in FLOKKR, including a talk with Freaky Clown titled How I Rob Banks and a theremin talk with Dorit Chrysler.

And how about a debate on the energy of the future?

Experts with widely different interests meet each other in a debate, where the audience can expect inspiring speeches, but also get the opportunity to ask critical questions and cheer on those with whom they share opinions. We will discuss the energy of the future based on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: How to solve the climate problem, with cheap and green energy. What types of energy do we need in Denmark, what is possible internationally and how busy are we really if we are to make a difference to the climate crisis?

Moderator: Søren Bjørn-Hansen

Panel: Brian Vad Mathiesen (representing wind energy), Sara Hansen (from the green think tank Concito) and Ask Løvschall-Jensen (representing nuclear power with thorium)

Activities in FLOKKR:

Sunday 30 June at 17.30-18.15: Theremin talk with Dorit Chrysler

Monday 1 July at 12.00-12.45: Ethical hacker Freaky Clown talk

Tuesday 2 July at 16.30-17.15: Debate on future energy (see above for more information)
