I USED TO HIDE MY SCARS BUT NOW THEY ARE A PART OF ME

PUBLISHED MONDAY 1.7.2019

25 year old Jessica Barkani has spent 8 years in the psychiatric system. Now she sees the festival and youth culture in a whole new light.

“The scars are forcing me to tell my story”, 25 year old Jessica Barkani says looking at her left forearm.

She was 14 when she started becoming anorecsic and the progress and foolishness of being a teenager was exchanged with psychiatric wards, over doses, razor blades and fixation. She has been hospitalized for more than 8 years and while her piers downed Jägermeister and went to festivals, she watched from a completely different reality.

“It was hard looking at everyone else who seemed to be in control of their lives.

Jessica Barkani is one of 10 young people telling their stories in podcasts. The podcasts have been made available in Dream Space F during Roskilde Festival.

The podcasts are produced by Danish Red Cross Youth.

Red Cross Denmark Youth is one of many Solidarity Partners at this year's festival. Their project focuses on young people, who have been hospitalized, jailed or who grew up in children's homes.
