A surreal world of marimbas, chimes and synths detailing the buzzing city life of Moscow

Kate Shilonosova is a Moscow-based producer, singer, composer, designer, she fronts the post-punk band Glintshake (or, which we think is the correct spelling in Russian: ГШ) and is a part of Moscow Scratch Orchestra who reinterprets the music of the avant-garde composer Cornelius Cardew.

She also works solo under the name Kate NV.

As you can probably imagine, Kate NV is an artist who manoeuvres instinctively in whatever musical environs she finds herself.

Her solo project has developed a lot along the way.

In 2016, she released the album Binasu, an album full of sugary synth-pop calling for references like Björk and Robyn – but informed by a whole different world of experience.

On her latest album, для FOR (2018), Kate NV scores her native urban environment of Moscow. It was partly inspired by sounds she heard in her flat and around Moscow but evokes a bright cartoon world of her own design. It’s surreal – and very exciting.

Through her free-form compositional skills she builds multi-layered and eclectic soundscapes. Kate NV paints a sonic sound arrangement with every track she lays down.

Hold your breath when this Russian artist start live-sampling triangles, glass and what-not – it all builds into a beautiful sound world that doesn’t really sound like anything else.
