Nkumba could very well be the African origin of the words cumbia and rumba. It means ‘belly button’ in the Bantú language.
Go ahead: Press that button and see how this human sound system will have you dancing all night long!
Nkumba System combines African and Latin-American rhythms like rumba, highlife, Afrobeat, cumbia and salsa with some Latin psicodelia and the jammy descarga style.
The quartet was founded in Bogotá, Colombia in 2016 by guitarist Guillo Cros who also plays in Romperayo (they played Roskilde 2017). He teamed up with Romperayo’s bass player, Jhon Socha as well as Leonel Alexander Merchán (percussion and lead vocals) and Richard Arnedo (drums).
The debut single “El Rey y el Peón” (‘the king and the pawn’) is a tropical hip-shaker and an open invitation to the dance floor with its plucky guitar riffs and enchanting melodies and rhythms. The rest of their material, collected on a debut EP, is just as hot and functions as an aural ticket to the Caribbean.
Come get your dance on when Nkumba System takes the stage at Roskilde Festival 2020.
