JOIN US FOR A MINI FESTIVAL AT OFELIA PLADS, COPENHAGEN

At Ofelia Plads by the Royal Danish Playhouse in central Copenhagen, you can attend a four-day mini festival full of art, music, dance, talks and more. Four day events – under the titles Time to Activate, Time to Listen, Time to Space Out and Time to Celebrate – take place from 17 to 20 May. They are created by Roskilde Festival and the Royal Danish Theatre.


Roskilde Festival and the Royal Danish Theatre invite you to four days full of art, music, talks and workshops.

It takes place in a spectacular live setting at Ofelia Plads in Copenhagen. Here you’ll find a work of art by English artist Martin Creed – a large rotating neon sign with the wording UNDERSTANDING. And understanding is precisely what all events will examine.

Admission is free of charge for the three events Time to Activate, Time to Listen and Time to Space Out. However, to ensure a safe experience we kindly ask you to book a ticket in advance – you only pay a small administration fee of DKK 15.

The culminating event Time to Celebrate costs DKK 100 and includes a meal and an algae-infused beer (yes, you read just correctly!).

17 May – Time to Activate (16:30-19:00)

Time to Activate is an event that examines how art can be activist. The programme offers a talk with artistic activists and activist artists who seek to create movements in our society and to excite our ability to act. The panel offers up body art, music, public art and street art. During the day, we facilitate workshops where you can explore your activist artistic skills. The event is in Danish.

  • The Art Democrats (Copenhagen Contemporary)
    Workshop: Put into words what you are passionate about and turn your activism into art.
  • Nadia Tehran
    Musician and performance artist who focuses on diaspora in her performance.
  • Renegade Runners
    Workshop: Express your oath and become a contemporary knight.
  • Søren-Emil Schütt
    Experience works from the art project "Til vægs", originally exhibited in a former ghetto in northern Copenhagen.
  • Sofia Ivarsson
    Sustainable artist and lighting designer. As part of Renegade Runners she focuses on the artistic work of activism.

18 May – Time to Listen (16:30-19:00)

Time to Listen focuses on how we create an understanding when we are listening – and how we can create spaces to listen in new ways. We invite you to a meditative and educational afternoon when innovative artists from the Danish growth layer enter into dialogue with a former tonmeister at the Royal Danish Theatre to create situations that have not been heard before. The event is in Danish.

    Talk with the initiators behind the academy about stepping into music in new ways and about opening our senses to alternative listening experiences.
  • Forlaget Kornmod
    Experience a sound piece composed using analogue field recordings from Ofelia Plads, performed live.
  • Karsten Wolstad
    Former tonmeister at the Royal Danish Theatre engages in a talk with Sofie Birch about creating sound universes and about the effect of sound on mind and body.
  • Sofie Birch
    Melodic and ambient concert performance that combines electronic hardware and found sounds. Sofie Birch Also enters into a talk with Karsten Wolstad.

At 15:30-16:15 The Royal Theatre’s modern dance company Corpus will give a performance under the title Corpus Episodes: Home #2 in which they interpret the concept of ‘home’ in collaboration with choreographer Fréderic Gies and performance artist Christian Falsnaes. 19 May – Time to Space Out (20:00-22:00)

Science and spirituality are dealt with on this reflective evening when focus is on life and consciousness – on this planet and in space. Time to Space Out has invited guests with bright minds, a brass quintet and you can also meditate into outer space while connecting with your fellow participants. The event is in English.

  • Københavns Messingkvintet
    Brass band who excels in chamber music.

    The actress has a leading voice for a joint meditation.

20 May – Time to Celebrate (18:30-20:45)

The culmination of the mini festival sends you on an adventurous and festive route with a diverse programme covering speeches, gastronomy, performance and music. Everything in relation to Martin Creed's artwork UNDERSTANDING.

Time to Celebrate costs DKK 100 + fee. Included in the price is a meal of plant-based, sustainable food and an algae-infused beer.

    The artist duo presents an algae-like bar where you are served algae-infused beer.

    The folk band plays a concert and reminds us of our Nordic musical roots.
  • Corpus
    The Royal Theatre’s dance company Corpus will give a performance under title Corpus Episodes: Home #2 in which they interpret the concept of ‘home’ in collaboration with Choreographer Fréderic Gies and performance artist Christian Falsnaes.
  • Martin Creed
    The English artist opens the party with a performative activation of his artwork Work No. 2630 UNDERSTANDING
  • Røst
    Young speakers, curated by the speech school and festival Røst, put into words how they would like to be understood in a time when unity and solidarity are paramount.
