Hateful black metal delivered with lots of grooves

Ready to be disciplined? Danish band Gabestok (translates to ‘pillory’) is a sound equivalent to the old punishment instrument. Thrust your head and hands in the frame and get a taste of this.

Gabestok is a two-man band – Fleep on guitar/vocals and DØ (‘die’) on drums – and they are anti-pretty-much-everything.

With nods to punk and thrash, the duo plays blistering black metal with a (of course!) nihilist outlook on life. Just look at song titles like “Du får først fred når du dør” (’you won’t find peace until you die’) and ”Du giver mig udslæt” (’you give me a rash’). The sombre moods are turned into an aggressive FU attitude with fast-paced songs, clipping distortion and fierce screams.

Gabestok remembers the groove in their songs, and they are unafraid of taking things down a notch once in a while. And when they do that they sometimes add a gloomy organ to their sound.

Gabestok was first presented to the world on the compilation Korpsånd – An Introduction to the New Wave of DKBM (listen), full of young black metal bands growing out of the Copenhagen counter-culture hotbed Mayhem.

The band released their debut album 3 in 2019, which was followed by the 2021 release Én gang rådden, altid rådden (‘once rotten, always rotten’). It’s catchy, ugly and groovy stuff!

Punishment awaits when this mad duo let loose their angry music at Roskilde Festival 2022.
