Melike Şahin is a singer-songwriter born and raised in Istanbul in Turkey.
She first made a name for herself as the singer of Turkish alternative band BaBa ZuLa who challenged all ideas of how Turkish music could sound. They mixed oriental instruments with modern electronic sounds and created their own sound which they called ‘Istanbul psychedelic’. BaBa ZuLa has previously played at Roskilde Festival.
Then, Melike Şahin stepped out of the band to pursue a solo career.
She released her first single in 2017, the irresistible “Deli Khan”. That same year, Şahin performed at the Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of film director Tony Gatlif’s Djam (find the soundtrack right here – it features three Melike Şahin songs).
In 2021, the Turkish singer released her much-awaited debut album, Merhem, which has been praised in her home country. It’s an intriguing listen! You can hear elements of pop, R&B and even disco. There’s a certain nostalgia built in the songs which is noticeable in the keyboards, the baglama (a traditional lute) and the oriental violins.
Şahin herself describes her style as ‘Mediterranean arabesque’. It’s innovative while at the same time tracing some of the influential Turkish singers who have inspired her, including Safiye Ayla, Müzeyyen Senar and Selda Bağcan.
Come get a taste of Turkey. In an electrifying cross field of the modern and the traditional.
