Afrofuturist grooves and dancefloor heat

“A red hot cocktail of urban grooves which takes us from Accra to Johannesburg, passing by Kinshasa and other planets.”

That was the fitting description made by Le Monde about the music collective Onipa who have really made their mark on the European electronic music scene.

With roots in different music cultures, Onipa (which means ‘human’ in the Akan language of Ghana) have created a fusion of danceable urban grooves, dizzying electronics, Afrofuturism and unstoppable energy that takes you on a journey from Ghana to London where the group is based.

Born out of a collaboration between long-time friends K.O.G. (Kweku of Ghana of KOG and the Zongo Brigade) and Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist), the 4-piece live show features K.O.G. on vocals, balafon and percussion, Tom on guitar, percussion and electronics, Dwayne Kilvington (Wonky Logic) on synths and MPC and Finn Booth (Nubiyan Twist) on drums.

In 2020, Onipa released the debut album We No Be Machine, which is a danceable fusion of deep Afro grooves, electronic undercurrents, Afrofuturism and wild energy, while celebrating the musical and cultural encounters that the group creates.

In 2021, the band returned with another selection of Afrofuturist grooves and dancefloor heat. Tapes of Utopia has the wild spirits of Afrobeat, highlife and soukous spun into a scintillating mix of electronic beats. Your body can only bop instinctively to these sounds.
