Soulful musician invites you on a groovy journey through Lagos

It will be warm and groovy when Nigerian musician Adédèjì visits Roskilde this summer. The brilliant singer and guitarist captures the essence of Lagos as a vibrant metropolis where cool swinging West African traditions mix with international hybrids of soul, jazz and funk.

Lagos as a city and a state is clearly very much on Adédèjì's mind, not least on his latest album, 'Yoruba Odyssey', where his love for the city is expressed in beautiful anthems such as 'Lagos Blues'. A track that is also an excellent example of the soulful glow of the music, with Adédèjì's poignant voice playing against a full soul choir.

The album, released in 2022, was recorded at the legendary Afrodisia/Decca Studio, which has also hosted artists such as Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade. These artists are a big part of the spiritual baggage of Adédèjì's odyssey. So are names like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Prince and Wes Montgomery. And we dare say it sounds like a recipe for a good Roskilde party when Adédèjì takes us on his exuberant, funky and soulful journey through Lagos and the West African Yoruba culture.
