FRIDAY 5 JULY

Sonic surrealism from award-winning and boundary-crossing turntable artist

Mariam Rezaei began exploring the turntable at the age of 15, first as a DJ who virtuosically carved out a place for herself in an otherwise male-dominated hip-hop scene, then as a radical explorer of the turntable as an instrument.

A multi-award-winning composer and musician, her approach to the turntable bridges jazz, noise, hip-hop, classical music and more with often overwhelming soundscapes that prompted The Guardian to call them "high-velocity surrealism".

Rezaei has collaborated with artists as diverse as Joan La Barbara, Valentina Magaletti, Lasse Marhaug and Mette Rasmussen, and her own releases have garnered ecstatic reviews, and her latest album BOWN was hailed as one of the best albums of 2023 by The Quietus and The Wire.

Seeing her unfold live on her turntable is a baffling experience, and fortunately, this will be possible at this year's Roskilde Festival. The show is part of the concert series Heartcore World Music XXXL, curated by Behrang Najafi, Shahin Entezami (Temp-Illusion), and Simin Stine Ramezanali (abji_hypersun/SLIM0).

The program features artists who navigate the intersection of hip-hop, scratching, and acoustic music, contributing to breaking down musical conventions. Heartcore World Music XXXL invites you to an immersive experience that challenges preconceived notions, creates new spaces, and encourages you to experience music in a fresh way.
