Together with the Congolese art collective Ndaku Ya La Vie Est Belle, you are invited to the workshop From Trash to Art, where you can experience how horror is transformed into beauty, oblivion into creation, and powerlessness into community.
The collective creates their works within an urban reality shaped by severe challenges affecting both the environment and human health. In Kinshasa, the lack of public waste management, pollution from the burning of toxic materials, and water contamination are among the most pressing issues in a city of more than 18 million inhabitants.
The materials can range from can lids and cigarette butts to scrap parts from machines and vehicles, dolls left behind by children who have died, or electronic waste that was once the country’s natural resources. Anything available – often collected over several years – becomes part of their works.
Ndaku Ya La Vie Est Belle is a scrap art collective based in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Here, waste and discarded materials become objets trouvés — found objects – transformed into wearable sculptures for performances in streets, festivals, and exhibitions. Art becomes a tool for public education with the potential to raise awareness and inspire active participation – both in Kinshasa and elsewhere.
This is the first time the collective visits Europe, and in addition to Roskilde Festival, they will also take part in a residency organized by Clandestino Festival in Sweden.
