Since its inception in 2016, the Copenhagen-based sextet Alawari has managed to bring instrumental jazz to new listeners, while also thrilling jazz circles both at home and abroad.
They have won awards and received excellent reviews in Denmark, and have toured extensively in Europe, where their explosive energy and nuanced expression have made an impression. The six musicians can strike an intimate chord in their music and open up a symphonic grandeur with a sound like a whole big band, and they manage to convey a deep human experience in complex yet captivating compositions.
This was already evident from their first album, released on April Records in 2022, which was a cacophonous reflection on the nature of revolution. The album was followed in 2024 by Leviathan, which revealed a more spiritual vein in meditations on human transformation. No human emotion is foreign to the music, and with their collective improvisations, Alawari conveys a cosmic vision of a community that transcends the individual.
Alawari truly creates jazz that speaks to our times, reminding us of music's human presence, spiritual longing and revolutionary energy.
