Ata KakGH

Ecstatic highlife party from Ghanaian icon

Prepare for dance ecstasy when Ata Kak takes the stage at Roskilde Festival with his raw and thoroughly funky mix of Ghanaian highlife, electronic rhythms and hip-hop. He brings with him his new album Batakari, whose songs are sure to bring the good vibes to the stage.

Born in 1960, the Ghanaian musician has grown from an underground cult figure to a popular festival name thanks to the legendary album Obaa Sima, which he released himself on cassette tape in 1994 in a limited edition of 50 copies, only three of which were sold!

However, several years later, the release was discovered at a market in Ghana by Brian Shimkovitz, who used the tape to launch his popular blog Awesome Tapes From Africa in 2006. The album finally received an official re-release in 2015, and it has thrilled many music lovers thanks to its charming mix of DIY production, irresistible highlife grooves and Ata Kak's distinctive vocals, which draw on Ghana's Twi rap genre.

The release has also taken Ata Kak to major festivals, where he has proven himself to be a masterful party starter on stage. He demonstrates that he still has a flair for putting together powerful bangers on the long-awaited follow-up to Obaa Sima. On Batakari, his first new album in 30 years(!), Ata Kak adds new nuances to his sound without compromising on the funky charisma of his debut album. We look forward to welcoming the cult star to Roskilde Festival – it's going to be quite a party!
