Swedish indie-pop figure returns with what may be a final bow

It has now been more than ten years since we last experienced Lykke Li at Roskilde Festival. She returns this year with her sixth album, The Afterparty, which she has described as “possibly my last”. The album is released on 8 May and marks her first since Eyeye in 2022.

The Afterparty arrives almost exactly 18 years after her breakthrough with the debut album Youth Novels, featuring enduring tracks such as “Little Bit” and “I’m Good, I’m Gone”. Recorded in Stockholm with a 17-piece orchestra, the forthcoming release explores darker emotions including revenge, shame and despair. The first single, the string-led and decadent disco track “Lucky Again”, balances grandeur and vulnerability in a way only Lykke Li can.

Time and again, Lykke Li has demonstrated her ability to unite classic songwriting with inventive production in finely wrought pop dramas, drawing on elements of dreamy 1960s pop, synth-pop, trap beats and shoegaze-inflected indie. Strong hooks and cinematic moods coexist within a universe steeped in Nordic melancholy while still opening onto moments of dancefloor euphoria.

Her gift for conjuring a dreamlike, melancholic atmosphere has also made her a sought-after collaborator. She contributed to David Lynch’s 2013 album The Big Dream and has welcomed artists such as Skrillex and Tyler, The Creator into her own multifaceted pop world.

When Lykke Li takes to the stage at Roskilde Festival with The Afterparty in tow, she brings a work that may prove to be both the beginning of a new chapter and a possible coda to a distinctive career.
