SATURDAY 4 JULY

A poignant blend of sacred hymns, folk music and alt-pop embraces pain and hope

It is difficult to remain unaffected after attending a concert by Sara Parkman. The audience at Roskilde Festival could testify to this when the Swedish musician and her band performed in 2022, both at a regular festival concert and a special concert in Roskilde Cathedral. Both showed an artist with a unique ability to create a very special space around the music – an almost ritualistic and healing space that can accommodate the most difficult feelings and thoughts.

Her songs have deep roots in both Nordic folk music and a sacred hymn tradition, but at the same time they speak directly to our times with both harsh social criticism and spiritual drama. Here, the whole of human existence is embraced in songs that touch on wild anger, deep despair, fragile hope and the devotion of love.

Parkman made her debut as a solo artist in 2016 with the personal album Sara Parkmans skog, which was followed in 2019 by the masterpiece Vesper, where inspiration from sacred music traditions really came to the fore. Each album she creates is like stepping into a world of its own – such as the 2022 album Eros Agape Philia, which ambitiously explores different aspects of the nature of love.

Musically, the poignant songs are lifted by an expression in which the sacred language of church music and the scales of folk music create glowing connections with modern indie folk, psychedelic rock and atmospheric soundscapes, and in which Parkman shines through with her charisma, beautiful vocals and fiery violin tones. This spring, Parkman will finally release the follow-up to Eros Agape Philia, and we look forward to experiencing this fantastic musician and her band again at Roskilde Festival.
