On her latest album, Middle of Nowhere, Kacey Musgraves returns to her native Texas and to a musical heritage shaped by the state’s dance halls, where country meets genres such as Mexican Norteño and Creole Zydeco. The title is inspired by a sign outside her hometown but also serves as a metaphor for an album centered on a break-up, filled with pain, human warmth and humour. Collaborations with Billy Strings and Willie Nelson underline her deep love of country and Americana, while Musgraves continues to draw on modern pop songwriting and follow her own musical path.
By combining classic country, modern pop songwriting and a persistent desire to push the genre’s boundaries, Kacey Musgraves has built a catalogue that places her among the most significant voices of her generation. At the same time, she continues to provoke more conservative corners of the country world with queer anthems and a rebellious attitude. The first single from her latest album, “Dry Spell”, was a decidedly steamy anthem about 365 days without sex and has since inspired a lubricant collaboration called “Drought Drops”.
