Enter a beautiful and mysterious universe when Merope bring their atmospheric sounds to Roskilde Festival. At a crossroads between ancient Baltic folk melodies and modern experimentation, the duo has gained international recognition for a sound that mesmerises fans of folk, jazz, ambient and contemporary electronic music alike.
"Combining the timeless magic of traditional Baltic folk with an airy, searching futurism" wrote Electronic Sound about the duo, which consists of Lithuanian vocalist Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė, who also plays the traditional string instrument kanklės, and Belgian multi-instrumentalist Bert Cools.
Over five albums so far – most recently 2024's masterful Vėjula – Merope have refined their boundless expression, striking a delicate balance between poignant folk melodies and searching sound worlds that evoke a timeless and dreamy atmosphere. Time and time again, the duo manages to forge new and special connections through collaborations with the likes of Lithuanian choir Jauna Muzika and legends like jazz guitarist Bill Frisell and ambient guru Laraaji.
However, they don't need guests to produce otherworldly sounds. Through over 10 years of close collaboration, Jurgelevičiūtė and Cools have developed an amazing sense of taking the audience on a mind-expanding musical journey. And you're invited to join them when Merope visits Roskilde Festival this summer.
