Let Us Clap is the evocative title of Lamisi's newly released album, which immediately draws the listener into a musical ritual, demonstrating music's ability to create both unity and resistance.
Lamisi made a name for herself as an amazing singer in her home country of Ghana as part of the Patch Bay Band. In 2019, she released her solo debut album, Brighter Side, where her stated inspiration from the likes of Angelique Kidjo was noticeable in a strong fusion of pan-African traditions and modern pop.
On Let Us Clap, she and producer Wanlov the Kubolor take an exciting new step with a captivating and original blend of deep traditions from northern Ghana, trance-inducing polyrhythms and futuristic electronic sounds. The music expresses a deep love for Lamisi's cultural and musical roots, while also articulating a hope for change.
For Lamisi, who founded the Lamisi Music Foundation to fight for girls' and women's rights, music and activism go hand in hand. And Let Us Clap is very much an artistic tribute to a feminine community in music, where Lamisi has drawn inspiration from women who taught her to clap the traditional rhythms of northern Ghana. A powerful expression of liberation and empowerment in an encounter between tradition and futurism, which we look forward to experiencing at this year's Roskilde Festival.
