They caused quite a sensation at the 10th anniversary of the African Nyege Nyege Festival last year. Now the new supergroup Pili Pili Girls are ready to give Roskilde Festival a taste of the sweat-drenched, twerking rave culture from Tanzania’s burgeoning singeli scene. The concert at Roskilde Festival will be their first international festival gig, and the four women of Pili Pili Girls intend to send the audience into pure dance ecstasy.
This isn’t the first time Roskilde Festival has had the pleasure of showcasing the wild, energetic dance culture of Singeli. And if you were at Sisso & Maiko’s concert in 2023, you’ve already experienced first-hand just how wild it can be when the unbridled atmosphere of Dar es Salaam’s street parties is unleashed on a concert stage.
Singeli has its epicentre in Tanzania’s capital, where it originated in the sprawling working-class neighbourhoods of Tandale and Manzese, but this high-energy, punk-infused electronic music has also gained a firm foothold among dance enthusiasts worldwide, not least thanks to the forward-thinking East African label Nyege Nyege and their festival of the same name.
It is therefore only natural that Nyege Nyege have helped to introduce the Pili Pili Girls, a group comprising four of the singeli scene’s most iconic performers. With their unique group energy, they have a rare ability to get the crowd going with spontaneous choreography and mosh pits accompanied by hyper-energetic singeli rhythms. Their debut album is due out in late 2026, and we’re absolutely thrilled that Roskilde Festival will be hosting their first European show.
