- Monday 30 JuneFuture Trees – Plant A Hope For The Future, 12:00, The Yard
What does hope look like when it’s allowed to take root? And how can a tree be both a memory and a new beginning?
At this year’s Roskilde Festival, climate activists from Nairobi invite you to get your hands in the soil at the workshop Future Trees – Plant a Hope for the Future.
The inspiration comes from Kenya’s capital, where activists plant Memorial Trees in urban green spaces to honour people killed by police violence. These trees serve both as a place of remembrance for families and as a way to strengthen local communities and their resilience to climate change.
Now you can help plant a tree in The Yard and at the same time formulate a hope, a thought, or a statement for the future – something the tree will symbolise and carry with it for years to come, as it grows tall and strong.
When the festival ends, the site will be home to a new forest – a lasting space for hope and reflection, contributing positively to biodiversity, climate, and the landscape.
The workshop is facilitated by Dreamtown and their Kenyan partner Mathare Social Justice Center (MSJC), who will share stories and experiences from their work with climate justice in Nairobi’s informal settlements.
Dreamtown is a Copenhagen-based NGO that supports young people and their dreams in cities across Africa – with a focus on creating youth-friendly urban spaces in informal areas.
MSJC is a Social and Ecological Justice Advocacy for the People of Mathare. The Organisation is part of a determined network of close to 30 grassroots centres working on human rights and social justice issues in Kenya through engaged community and social movement platforms.
