English duo MRCY create music that lifts you up and lights a candle in a dark time with revitalising soul harmonies and warming grooves.
Kojo Degraft-Johnson's ecstatic vocals, rooted in soul, gospel and jazz, instantly grab the listener's attention. You immediately sense that he has something urgent to say, and with his impressive voice he draws the audience into a rare musical universe that is elevated by the creative productions of collaborator Barney Lister.
The duo makes modern soul music with a keen awareness of tradition, but also with an infectious presence and contemporary sounds that made last year's debut album Volume 1 a true delight. Word of MRCY's soulful sound has spread thanks in no small part to the duo's phenomenal live shows. It's hard to attend one of their concerts without immediately becoming a fan. "MRCY are on the path to becoming the UK's next great soul group," Rolling Stone magazine wrote after attending one of their festival shows.
That prophecy may well come true with the duo's new album, Volume 2, which, like their debut album, will be released on the acclaimed Dead Oceans label. It takes the duo's alternative soul sound to new heights with psychedelic atmospheres, jazzy flutes and Afrobeat-inspired polyrhythms. And of course with vocals in a class of their own. The album will be released just before the duo's concert at Roskilde Festival. A magical soul séance awaits.
