It is with great pride that Roskilde Festival this year can offer a special project from two of the most important modern voices in Sami culture. With vocals in focus, Elina Waage Mikalsen and Katarina Barruk's work Seäjvvuot, created especially for Roskilde Festival, invites you on a journey into the mysterious universe of the joik.
The joik is not only considered one of Europe's oldest living vocal traditions. It is also a music that gives voice to a culture that has been oppressed by those in power for much of history. With its shamanic connection to nature, the joik also carries important messages for a time when nature itself is under tremendous pressure.
The two artists have backgrounds in different Sami communities. Multi-artist Elina Waage Mikalsen, who works with sound, video, installation and much more, has roots in the Sea Sámi culture, while musician Katarina Barruk, who can also be seen at this year's Roskilde Festival with her own band, comes from the Ume Sámi culture.
In Seäjvvuot they weave fragments of traditional joik from their different cultures into a work that asks whether joik can be used as a tool to bridge past, present and future, and explores themes of memory, oppression and healing. Expect a thought-provoking and moving encounter with a unique musical tradition from northernmost Europe elevated by two strong artistic voices.
